Alumni Highlights Jai Rodriquez, the "culture vulture" among the Fab 5 on Bravo's popular makeover show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," returned to the Cultural Arts Center to perform during the 30th faculty and alumni gala celebration this past spring.
It was as if he never left. Throughout the day, in between sound and lighting checks, Jai relaxed in the courtyard "catching up" with former teachers, students, other alumni, and principal, Ava Favara.
"Memories, memories, memories," Jai told a Newsday reporter before the evening performance. "Graduating from here was so painful. It wasn't like school. It was like family, and I really respected my teachers and the other students."
Jai majored in musical theater and graduated in 1997. Shortly after receiving his diploma, he starred as Angel in the Broadway hit Rent. His other credits include All My Children and the play Spinning Into Butter, at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
"I always talk about the Cultural Arts Center," Jai said. "I was fortunate to receive the Cultural Arts Scholarship, and wanted to come back and pass the opportunity on to other students."
A talented singer, dancer and actor, Jai also finds time to work on a self-produced CD in the recording studio.
